Mary is the daughter of Nathaniel and Arabella Jemima Gray Deaver. She was raised in North Carolina by an uncle after her father's death. Her mother went on to remarry and moved to Texas where she owned land in Brenham. Mary and Andrew were married in North Carolina in 1828 and they had eight children, Jemima, Daniel, Nathan, William, Sarah, Andrew, James and John. The Cathey family moved to California in 1852 from Fort Smith, Arkansas by wagon train. During their voyage they came across the Oatman family almost all of which were killed by Indians, a town in Arizona is named in honor of one of the survivors. The town of Cathey's Valley is named in honor of Polly's husband Andrew.
