Gary E. Ostrom, 53, of West Barnstable passed away on December 26, 2011 in a tragic accident. Gary was born in Norwood on Nov. 11, 1958 to Edward and Natalie Ostrom of Walpole and graduated from Walpole High School in 1976. He moved to Sandwich with his family in 1976 where he began his fishing career, first as a fish cutter and then progressed to commercial fishing out of a skiff. His deep love for working on the water and his hard work enabled him to purchase a 32 foot BHM lobster boat, “The Rare Bird,” in 1986. He fished out of the Sandwich Basin, lobstering for the next 25 years. He also fished for codfish, sea bass, stripped bass, blue fin tuna, scup, horseshoe crab and also shellfished in Barnstable. During the last few years, he additionally worked for Andy Baler at the Chatham Pier Fish Market while changing from lobstering to conch fishing. He was second vice president of the Massachusetts Lobstermen’s Association for more than 15 years. He spearheaded the Whale Safe Program that is in use today,
