Joseph Samuel Wirag was born at St. Louis, MO April 27, 1873, and died Wednesday July 1, 1931, aged 58 years, 2 months and 4 days. Death was due to paralysis of the throat and head. His father and mother died when he was quite young and he made his home with his sisters, both of whom survive him - - Mrs. Julia McGregor of New Orleans, La, and Mrs. Lou Betteiger of St. Louis, MO. On June 24, 1899, he was joined in marriage to Katie Mateer in St. Louis. To this union three daughters were born, Mrs. Vesta Malwitz, Granite City, Ill; Miss Juila Wirag, Bismarck, MO and Mrs. Clara Armbruster of Flat River, MO., all of whom, together with his wife and one grandaughter, Sue Catherine Malwitz, survive him. While quite young Mr. Wirag began extensive travels which included all parts of the world. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy and was attached to the Gunboat Petrel, and later was with Admiral Dewey on the warship Olympic.
